London/ Jalandhar (March 13, 2014): Highlighting the plight of Indian students and illegal immigrants in England especially those from Punjab Sikh council UK has revealed that it has already helped 30 young girls and boys to return to Punjab who were living there in pathetic conditions and 50 more such cases were being pursued with British authorities. Council has revealed that in a few cases they have come across a few cases in which hapless girls were trapped into prostitution.
Sikh council UK secretary general Gurmel Singh and other office bearers informed that conditions for those staying illegal have worsened after UK government increased fine over employers from 10,000 pounds to 20,000 pounds for employing an illegal immigrant. The Council urged the Punjab government to tighten noose around travel agents as they found from the stranded youths – especially on student visa- that in several cases the educational institutes did not even exist or were not proper and these students were left in lurch after they landed in England after spending a lot of money. The Council also screened a documentary “Broken Dreams” on the plight of these youths. Latter were living under bridges or at other public places.
Gurmel Singh said that they were involved by UK home department to assist these boys and girls in returning back and provide them a socially secure environment after they would come in touch of the community members there.
“Once these fellows come in our contact the British authorities do not pursue any punitive action against them,” said Balvinder kaur, head of operations of the council. She revealed that they received 180 calls after they started the project of voluntary return scheme in November. She said that while British authorities were clearing the cases quickly the police verification reports of these stranded migrants were taking more time at the end of Indian authorities.
Meanwhile Gurmel Singh said that they were appealing to the aspirants of going abroad to first enquire and ensure a proper place and sustenance of the young men and women going there. “Travel agents would misguide that the students can work there but after the British government increased the fine on employers these fellows can’t even work on very low wages and then they fail to sustain themselves and in such environment girls are very vulnerable,’ he said.
