Sikh Intellectuals Condemn Badals for Propagating ‘False Waiver of GST’ on Langar

June 11, 2018 | By

Chandigarh: A conclave of concerned Sikhs was held at Chandigarh on June 9, 2017, that was attended by various Sikh intellectuals. The purpose of the conclave was to present a point of view to the Sikhs sangat and people of the Punjab, on some current issues of importance, said S. Gurpreet Singh, one of the organizers.

A joint statement issued after the conclave condemned Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leaders for ‘misguiding the Sikh Sanagat’ on the GST waiver issue.

A statement endorsed by Former IAS S. Gurtej Singh, Dr. Gurdarshan Singh Dhillon, S. Sukhdev Singh Journalist, S. Jaspal Singh Sidhu Journalist and S. Gurpreet Singh (Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha) reads:

“On the false waiver of GST on food items used for Langar, it was observed that the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), which is on thanksgiving spree in Delhi, is trying to dupe the Sikh people once again. The GST has not been waived. Instead the Guru’s langar has been officially converted to ‘Sewa Bhoj Yojna’, under which the Sikhs will have to apply to get some paltry sum as aid from the government – if at all. The purpose of the langar is to break caste barriers and to universally establish equality with dignity in the social relations of myriad variations of human societies. We cannot belittle it by calling it ‘Sewa Bhoj’. The Guru had refused any aid from Emperor Akbar who offered a land grant to sustain it. The institution of langar is eternal whereas the Sewa Bhoj Yojna appears to be a temporary pilot project with paltry financial provision that will not be adequate even for the ‘kanwarias’ for one year, for whom it seems to be designed. The Sikhs must condemn this tax as “Hindutava Jazyia” much like the Mughal Jazyia which was not levied on the Sikhs even by the Mughals, and to keep paying it”.

Khudmukhtiari campaign – another gimmick by SAD (Badal)

“The new gimmick of ‘khudmukhtiari’ (autonomy) launched by the SAD (Badal) through the institution of the Akal Takhat is a political gimmick just as GST is a religious gimmick. We appeal to the Punjabis not to allow the dust to be thrown into their eyes. The SAD is just trying to recycle a wooden cooking pan. This “kaath di handi” was much used in the last radical spasm (daura) of Dharamyudh. The SAD (B) leaders will sacrifice thousands of spirited young men and then sell their dead bodies to Delhi in return for political power to their descendants. No Punjabi must fall into the snare again”.
