Sikh media raised the issue of homeless Punjabi Youth in Southall, London

December 13, 2011 | By

London, UK (December 12, 2011): Many homeless persons spend chilling nights of December on footpaths of Southall city, near London. Sikh Channel, one of the two community channels of Sikhs in UK, has brought this issue into light through street journalism and raised the concern of homeless Punjabi youth.

Many of these young persons had come to UK on students visa but due to lack of work opportunities or other reasons are unable to maintain themselves.

Manjeet Singh talking to TV presenter

“I take bath at a Church, feed myself at Gurudwara Langar,  and spent my nights on footpath” Manjeet Singh told Sikh Channel presenter Dr. Gurbir Singh Jagbir during live broad cast. Manjeet was covering his face with cloth as he did not want to disclose his appearance.

Another young person, who was addressed as Bittu by the Sikh channel presenter was having serious infection in one of his legs. “Yesterday he was not ready to talk to us, but tonight he has shown us his infected leg, and ready to receive our help” Dr. Jagbir told viewers.

Another person Chamkaur Singh said that he want to get out of this situation.

Some others fled the scene when the channel team and viewers of the Sikh Channel reached the spot, during live telecast, that lasted around 11 pm.

Some others told channel crew and others to leave them on their condition, because they considered their own deeds as the reason behind all this.

Previously, Sangat TV, another Sikh TV channel had hit the headlines during England Riots 2011, for coming out on streets with mic-gun and camera, doing gorilla journalism and awakening people to safeguard their properties. UK Prime Minister David Cameron had praised the efforts of Sangat TV in parliament.

This time Sikh Channel has touched a serious issue with emotional tone, and as a result many viewers have come forward to help these homeless youth. Some help was even extended to a number of persons in form of cash money for medical care and commodities of necessity.

It remains to be seen that whether these efforts would trigger a serious debate and consideration of reason behind this situation, that why the Punjabi youth having homes and livelihood back in Punjab are living in these conditions on foreign soil.
