Sikhs confined in Jails for decades – SCI notice to Punjab govt. & Jail superintendents

Ludhiana, Punjab (January 08, 2012): As per media reports the Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Punjab Government in the case of Bhai Lal Singh alias Manjeet Singh who has been confined in jails for last two decades and is currently lodged in Maximum Security Jail, Nabha.

According to information the Apex Court has asked the Punjab government to submit detailed report regarding the files of Sikh prisoners confined at Nabha and Patiala jails for last many years.
Senior advocate Balwant Singh Malik reportedly told the court that his client Lal Singh alias Manjeet Singh of Akalgarh village, Tehsil Phagwara, District Kapurthala (Punjab) is confined in Maximum Security Jail Nabha (Punjab) since a long time.
He told the court that Lal Singh was arrested from the State of Gujrat on July 16, 1992 and was sentenced to imprisonment for life in 1997 by the trial court under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act [TADA].
Advocate Malik further told the court that Lal Singh is not being released even after spending more than 20 years in prison.
He told the court that according to applicable norms – jail manuals, rules and laws, a life convict should be released from jail after spending twenty years in jail, but Lal Singh is still confined in the jail.
As per information available with Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi based division bench of the Supreme court of India (SCI) has issued an notice to Punjab government besides superintendents of Maximum Security Jail, Nabha and Central Jail, Patiala.
