Social bodies seek Akal Takht directive for protecting water bodies

Ludhaina, Punjab: Many social organizations have reprotedly written to Akal Takht Sahib to issue a directions to the Sikhs for protecting water bodies of the state from being polluted. The organizations which have written to Akal Takht on the subject include the Indian and Canadian chapters of RBS (Rajguru, Bhagat, Sukhdev) Roots, and EcoSikh – a four-year-old organization which connects Sikhs with environmental activism formed by Sikh values and beliefs propounded by Sikh Guru sahibs. Management committee of Guru Nanak Mission Centre in Brampton (Canada), and Maheeda, a local social organization – are also mulling writing to the Akal Takht Sahib.

Giving details, Amandeep Singh Bains, member of RBS Roots, said: “After ‘The Times of India’ took the lead in highlighting the sorry state of the Sidhwan Canal, which is an important water body of the city, we have sent a written appeal to Akal Takht Sahib to issue a ‘hukumnama’ to the Sikh community to protect the water bodies of Punjab, because water has been given the status of a father in Guru Granth Sahib. The pollution of the water bodies in the state is a serious issue as a large number of Punjabis are losing lives because of this evil. We also request for the early intervention of the highest decision making body so that Sikh community members can start working towards clean water bodies.”

Ravneet Singh, project manager of EcoSikh India, says: “The sixth Sikh Environment Day is being celebrated across the world on March 14 in honour of Guru Har Rai, the seventh Sikh Guru who is known as the saviour of nature and environment in Sikh history. So, to pay a tribute to the great guru on that day, we have written to Shri Akal Takhit Sahib to push some concrete order to the community members and government for protection of water bodies and nature in the state.”

Ravneet Singh further said that in the application sent to Akal Takht, Eco Sikh has written that animal corpses, plastics, chemical pollutants from hospital etc – which are a major source of pollution – are being pushed into water bodies. He added that this results in 90 out of 1 lakh population in the state having cancer, whereas in the Malwa belt, it is 136 per lakh, which is a serious cause of worry for people.

“We believe if Akal Takht Sahib issues a decree on the subject, the people and government will come forward to protect our water bodies from pollution, which will help in bringing down the deaths due to diseases,” he added.
