Patiala (May 24, 2011): The Sikh Students Federation has endorsed to the demand of raising memorial for those who died during June 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib, Amritsar. Sikh bodies have been raising the demand since many past years. This year they have decided to chalk-out some concrete strategy to induce the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee to raise the memorial with in precincts of the shrine commonly known as the Golden Temple of Amritsar. A meeting in this regard has been called by the Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani), led by former SSF President Daljeet Singh Bittu, on 27 May.
“Memorials of Baba Deep Singh and Baba Gurbax Singh, who defended the shrine from invaders’ attacks, are situated with in the precincts of Darbar Sahib. Memorial of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other martyrs’ should be built with in the sacred precincts because Bhindranwale, being the head of Damdami Takhsal, had followed the precedence set by its’ former heads Baba Deep Singh and Baba Gurbax Singh” said SSF President Parmjeet Singh Gazi.
“Moreover, Sikhs have a tradition, like any other civilization, of remembering, and raising memorials of, those who sacrificed lives while defending their faith” he added.
He informed that the SGPC had declared twice, in 2002 and 2005, to construct the memorial site but has drastically failed to transform its’ words into reality. He further informed that SSF would joint the joint meeting of Sikh bodies on 27th of May called by Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) to discuss the future course of action if SGPC fails to start the construction of memorial by that day. Organizations like Dal Khalsa and Khalsa Action Committee have already decided to join the meeting.
