SYP to organize Conference on youth affairs

December 24, 2010 | By

Jalandhar (December 24, 2010): With the aim of empowering and harnessing youth power for the welfare and growth of the Sikhs, a youth organization, Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP), is organizing a Conference at Jalandhar on Dec 25.

To mark its 2nd foundation day, the outfit would hold a one-day session to discuss and debate issues related to identity crisis and youth affairs.

Gurpreet Singh Mann, president of the youth body in a statement said the conference would dwell upon the need of channelising the youth’s energy in right direction for the right purposes.

He said they ”would not indulge in any direct political participation” but would certainly play a significant role by intervening in all social, religious and political debates that affect the present and future of the Sikh people. He clarified that their organization would foster talent scouting, proliferation and growth to nurture the ‘leaders of the future’.
Mann said the renowned lawyer of Punjab and Haryana High Court Advocate Navkiran Singh would speak on what constructive role youth should play to spread awareness on the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Perturbed over the increased incidents of pat-down of turbans at US airports, he said the Sikh identity was facing a crisis in India and abroad. The disrespect to turban was unaccepatble whether it happens in US, France or India, he said. Instead of staging a dharna outside American Embassy on 23rd at Delhi, it would have been much better for the SGPC to engage the American authorities through negotiation so as to resolve the problem.
