Ghanaians made history this week when they tore down a statue of Indian icon Mohandas Gandhi.
Amidst growing controversy over a statue of Gandhi which the Indian government demands that Malawi install in exchange for foreign aid, Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu visited the southern central African country to offer double its original $10 million investment on the condition that Malawians accept the statue.
In a formal response to growing outrage among citizens of Malawi about a proposed statue of Mohandas Gandhi which is being erected in Blantyre, the second-largest city in the southern central African country, the Government of Malawi suggested the statue is required by India in order for the country to continue benefitting from “credit and concessionary loans for various development projects.”
Malawi is now the second nation in Africa to bear witness to a sustained effort by the local population to block a statue of Mohandas Gandhi.
