A bill seeking declaration of first week of November as 1984 Sikh Genocide remembrance week passed in second reading in the Ontario Provincial Parliament.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada welcomes the tabling of An Act to Proclaim Sikh Genocide Awareness Week in the Ontario Legislature.
The Ontario Gurdwaras Committee (OGC) and Ontario Sikh and Gurudwara Council (OSGC) collectively commemorated the victims of the 1984 Sikh Genocide at Queen’s Park on November 7.
“This is not only about the Sikh community, this about protection of minorities and their civil rights,” said Singh. “When a government can brand entire communities as a threat in the absence of evidence, there are real consequences for racialized individuals, including discrimination.”
