New Delhi, India (January 28, 2014): It is learnt that the Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear in an open court the petition of Sikh political prisoner Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar for commutation of death sentence to life imprisonment.

New Delhi, India (January 21, 2014): A constitutional bench of The Supreme Court of India (SCI) based on P. Sathasivam, Chief Justice of India (CJI), Ranjan Gogoi, J, and Shiva Kirti Singh, J, commuted death sentences of 15 death penalty convicts to life imprisonments on January 21, 2014. Death sentences of 13 convicts were commuted on ground of inordinate delay in execution, while two others were granted commutation on the ground of deteriorated mental health condition.
New Delhi, India (January 21, 2014): As per recent media reports the Supreme Court of India commuted the sentences of 15 death row convicts on January 21, 2013. The SCI commuted these sentences while ruling that delays in their execution were grounds to change their sentences to life imprisonment.

London, England (August 28, 2013): It is learnt that Kirsty Brimelow QC, the Chairwoman, Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (BHRC) has written an open letter to the President of India, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh and the Indian Home Minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde in the matter of the immediate risk of execution of Professor Devinderpal Singh Bhullar.
Bathinda, Punjab (August 25, 2013): It is learnt that Bhai Gurbax Singh Hijacker passed away at Adesh Hospital near Bathinda, Punjab. He was a resident of Village Pakka Kalan and had hijacked an Air India flight going to Amritsar from New Delhi in 1989. He had Hijacked the plane without any arms/ammunition or explosives.
Furthermore, there are serious questions about whether Professor Bhullar’s trial was in accordance with the requirements of international law”, Schonveld added. “His conviction and death sentence are based solely upon an alleged confession he made in police custody, which he later retracted, claiming it was extracted under torture.

New Delhi, India (August 22, 2013): As per recent reports the execution of death sentence of Shivu and Jadeswamey of Karnatka has been stayed by the Supreme Court of India on August 21, 2013. They were scheduled to be executed on August 22.
New Delhi, India (August 20, 2013): According to a statement sent to Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) by Amnesty India's media officer: [o]n 14 August, India ’s Supreme Court upheld its rejection of Devender Pal Singh Bhullar’s commutation plea. He is now at risk of imminent execution. The mercy petitions of two other men were also rejected by the President in August, and reports suggest they could be executed on 22 August.
