Itanagar/Ludhiana (April 23, 2012): As per a news report by “Press Trust of India - PTI” the over 50,000-strong Sikh population in Assam feel they are a neglected lot with neither the Assam nor the Punjab governments giving them due recognition. Mostly scattered in Nagaon and Sonitpur districts, the Assamese Sikhs, as they have come to be known, trace their origin to 1820 when Maharaja Ranjit Singh sent 500 Sikh soldiers to the region to fight Myanmarese invaders.

The main reason behind static and confused situation on this issue could be the complex nature of issue, which on the one hand relates to the internal dynamics of the Sikh society (the definition of Sehajdhari and their role) and on the other hand it is related to relations of Sikhs with the Indian State (the Sikh Gurudwara Management Act, 1925; the role of Indian Parliament in Sikh religious affairs regarding amendment etc. of the 1925 Act and role of Indian courts being interpretting authority in relation to the said Act.).
Amritsar, Punjab (December 02, 2011): A committee constituted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is reported to have finalized the palace to build a memorial for attack on Darbar Sahib, Amritsar (also called the Golden Temple of Sri Amritsar) by Indian Army in June 1984, which was code-named by Indian State as "Operation Blue Star".

Chandigarh (March 29, 2010): A special court on Monday convicted Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Bheora was held guilty by additional district and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi in the trial held in the high security model jail here. The sentence will be announced on Tuesday.
