Brussels (November 05, 2013): As per information the Sikh Federation (UK) organised a successful human rights conference in the European Parliament on the 29th anniversary of the Genocide of Sikhs in November 1984. The conference was held on November 04, 2013.
New Delhi, India (November 4, 2013): As per media reports a Sikh pilot has accused Emirates Airlines for discriminating against him. He has reportedly said that the Gulf-based airlines turned him down for an interview, even after shortlisting him for an interview, only because he wears a turban.
Paris, France (October 11, 2013): The recent decision of United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) holding the requirement that Sikh men remove their turban before having a passport photograph taken in France is a threat to religious freedom is a major victory for Sikh diaspora regarding turban ban by French authorities. This decision is believed to mount pressure on French authorities to recognize and allow the Sikhs to wear the turban/dastar freely.
London, United Sikhs (October 09, 2013): The UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) has now ruled on three separate occasions in the last three years in favour of Sikhs to wear their turbans in France.
Paris, France (October 08, 2013): It is learnt that the United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) concluded that France has violated the religious freedom of 57 year old Shingara Mann Singh when he was asked to remove his turban for his passport photograph.
Kalamazoo County, Michigan (September 11, 2013): The United Sikhs has announced another civil rights policy advocacy victory resulting in the modification of court procedures in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, to recognize the Sikh religious practices.
Pike County, Mississippi (September 04, 2013): It is learnt that after filing a Civil Rights Complaint with the Department of Justice and persistent advocacy, the Pike County Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual now includes the harassment and non-discrimination policy. A US based NGO named the United Sikhs has welcomed this new policy.
Bobigny, Paris (August 18, 2013): “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied”, was the theme of United Sikhs' 5th Global Sikh Civil and Human Rights Conference. The notion was based upon the landmark decision of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in 76 year old French resident Ranjit Singh's turban case. As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Sikhs from all of the world congregated in France to attend the conference that concluded last weekend.
New Delhi, India (August 09, 2013): As per certain media reports Italy has assured Indian government that it was sensitive to the concerns of the Sikhs in the wake of a controversy after a Sikh delegation, comprising Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (DSGMC) and others, was held up at Rome airport and members asked to remove their turbans.
New Delhi, India (August 8, 2013): It is learnt that the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK and accompanying four others, namely Paramjit Singh Rana, Gurvinder Pal Singh, Puneet Singh Chandhok and Gurbachan Singh Cheema; were asked to remove their turbans at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on August 07, 2013.
Montreal/ Canada (June 12, 2013): It is learnt that the Quebec Soccer Federation has made a decision concerning its ban on turbans on the soccer pitch but will only reveal it in 10 days. It is notable that the Canadian Soccer Association suspended the provincial association on June 10, 2013 after it showed no sign of overturning its decision to to uphold a ban on Sikh turbans, patkas and keskis on the soccer pitch.
The Canadian Soccer Association has requested on 6 June that the Quebec Soccer Federation reverse its position on turbans/patkas/keski with no resolution,” said Victor Montagliani, President of the Canadian Soccer Association, following the Board of Directors meeting. “The Quebec Soccer Federation’s inaction has forced us to take measures in order to ensure soccer remains accessible to the largest number of Canadians.
Baramulla/Kashmir/India (June 10, 2012): It is learnt that the turbaned Sikh students have been attending classes for the last fortnight following their earlier exclusion for wearing their turban at the St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School in Baramulla, 50 km from the State Capital, Srinagar.
Ottawa, Canada (June 05, 2013) As per inforamtion, on June 04, 2013 Brampton Member of Parliament Parm Gill continued his call for the Quebec Soccer Federation’s to overturn its decision to ban turban-wearing players today, with the launch of a petition directed to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association.
Ottawa (June 2, 2013): The World Sikh Organization of Canada is deeply saddened by a decision of the Quebec Soccer Federation’s (QSF) Board of Directors maintaining its prohibition on the wearing of turbans by Sikh players.
Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir (May 24, 2013): A 107 year old Catholic school in Jammu and Kashmir has reportedly banned the Sikh Dastar (turban) and excluded some 40 Sikh students from classes for wearing the turban last week.
London, United Kingdom (May 21, 2013): It is learnt that a Sikh bus driver in Finland is fighting for his right to wear a turban while at work. As per information Sukhdarshan Singh, who works at the Veolia bus company at Vantaa near the Finnish capital of Helsinki, is trying to set a precedent by making the authorities allow him to wear a turban at work.
Toronto, Canada (March 14, 2013): As per information an NGO, United Sikhs has written to the Canadian Prime Minister earlier this week asking him to raise his objection to the turban ban in France, during his meeting with his French counterpart, who is currently visiting Canada.
New Delhi, India (February 18, 2013): It is learnt that the Sikhs held a peaceful protest outside the French Embassy in New Delhi on February 14, 2013 against the ongoing French turban. This was followed by the submission of a memorandum on the Turban issue addressed to French President Francois Hollande, who was on a trade visit to India.
For a Sikh it is obviously impossible to hide his turban. Yet you claim that your law is the same for everybody. This oxymoron -- "it's not same for Sikhs, but it is same for everyone" -- was the utterance of a French government spokesperson reportedly defending the decision to not lift the ban, despite the United Nations 2012 finding that France's ban violates the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
