Sikhs win turban case against France at the United Nations

Bobigny, France (12 January, 2012): The UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) has concluded that France had violated the religious freedom of 76 year old Ranjit Singh when he was asked to remove his turban for his ID photograph. This was disclosed today at a media conference, in Bobigny (near Paris), by the United Sikhs legal team, who had filed a communication on behalf of Ranjit Singh to the UNHRC in December 2008.

Paris, France (January 12, 2011): This news is would bring great relief for the Sikhs living in France and elsewhere in Europe that the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) has asked France to submit a report by March 15 on measures it is planning to take against violation of religious freedom of Ranjit Singh (76), who was asked to remove his turban while taking photo for an identity card.

Patiala (December 15, 2010): Taking a strong exception to the popularised view that the problem of compelling Sikhs to remove their turban for so-called security reasons exists in US, France or in foreign countries only; the SSF has maintained that the problem exists in India, and even in Punjab also. “Sikhs in India, and even in Punjab, are facing similar situation, where they are compelled to remove their turbans by police authorities” said Parmjeet Singh Gazi, National President of SSF.
