Sikhs win turban case against France at the United Nations

Bobigny, France (12 January, 2012): The UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) has concluded that France had violated the religious freedom of 76 year old Ranjit Singh when he was asked to remove his turban for his ID photograph. This was disclosed today at a media conference, in Bobigny (near Paris), by the United Sikhs legal team, who had filed a communication on behalf of Ranjit Singh to the UNHRC in December 2008.

New York, USA (August 31, 2011): Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) approached United Nations by submitting Memorandum to Honorable Heiner Bielefeldt, UN "Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief" demanding UN's immediate intervention to impress upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government to amend article 25 of the Indian Constitution to restore the independent status of Sikhism.

New York (March 10, 2011): A delegation of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) met and apprised Her Excellency Irina Bokova, Director General UNESCO on March 10 in New York about the discovery of “Mass Grave” of Sikhs in Hondh-Chillar, District Rewari, Haryana, India and submitted a written request asking UNESCO to preserve and manage the ruins of Hondh-Chillar as genocidal site under World Heritage Program.

In his telegram to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said, “I should like to make it clear that the question of aiding Kashmir in this emergency is not designed in any way to influence the state to accede to India. Our view which we have repeatedly made public is that the question of accession in any disputed territory or state must be decided in accordance with wishes of people and we adhere to this view.”
