Nawanshehr, Punjab (May 17, 2013): According to a news report by YesPunjab.Com: “[i]t took Nawanshahar Police five and a half months and some indirect ‘lessons’ in policing by Punjab and Haryana High Court to register an FIR against high profile Punjabi Rapper, Bollywood Singer Yo Yo Honey Singh, but finally it has taken the plunge and registered an FIR against the controversial singer for his much hyped, vulgar and obscene songs”.

Punjabi rapper Honey Singh – who is facing opposition for singing vulgar songs

It is learnt that FIR No. 79 has been registered at Police Station City Nawanshahr IPC against Honey Singh on the complaint filed by an NGO HELP through its representative Parvinder Singh Kittna.

The singer has been booked under provisions of Section 294 (singing, reciting or uttering any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place) of the Indian Penal Code.

Interestingly the complaint was filed on 1st of January, 2013 but Nawanshahar police chose to ignore the same on different pretexts and even tried to ‘cajole’ the complainant by telling them that their complaint was sent to Police authorities at Lucknow to club the same with an FIR already registered there against Honey Singh.

Parvinder Singh Kitna, told your website YesPunjab.com that the Nawanshahr Police refused to register an FIR against Honey Singh even as they were supplied with at least copies of seven different judgements of the Supreme Court in this regard. “We think that Nawanshahr Police were under some political pressure not to register case against Honey Singh”, Kitna said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Nawanshahar Police came out of slumber only after Punjab and Haryana High Court this Tuesday came heavily on the government of Punjab for not acting against singers singing obscene and vulgar songs. It had directed Governments of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh administration to take action against controversial Punjabi rapper Honey Singh for his vulgar songs which are freely available.

Taking up the PIL, filed by same NGO HELP and represented by High Court lawyer HC Arora, HC bench of Acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice Rakesh Jain had asked the Govt. of Punjab why it had not acted against singers of obscene and vulgar songs till now and why an FIR was not registered against Honey Singh even as there was no stay on any such matter by t he court.

The court had then said that for singing such songs section 294 of the IPC can be invoked and the Government of Punjab should have gone ahead with an FIR against Honey Singh as in his songs there is nothing except abuses.

The Court had in fact directed Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to act against Honey Singh and others to put an end to obscenity and vulgarity in songs.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PIL has specific allegations against Honey Singh for singing a song ‘Main Hoon Balatkari’.

The petition NGO, referring to above obscene, vulgar and highly objectionable song, had sought directions to set up some effective mechanism for curbing the menace of obscene, vulgar and lewd songs from the state of Punjab. It also sought that the state be asked to set up a Censor Board or frame some other policy to tackle the menace.
