California, USA (25 August 2024): In a Congressional address Representative Josh Harder of California recognized February 4th as ‘Saka Nakodar Day’ in the House of Representatives. The commemoration honors the memory of four Sikh students who were killed during Saka Nakodar in Punjab, India, in 1986.

On February 4, 1986, Indian security forces opened fire on unarmed Sikh students—Ravinder Singh, Baldhir Singh, Jhilman Singh, and Harminder Singh—who were peacefully protesting the desecration the “Sri Guru Granth Sahib.” This event, known as the “Saka Nakodar 1986” (Nakodar massacre of 1986), has since been condemned as a severe violation of human rights and freedom of assembly.

He stated, “Saka” translates to massacre in Punjabi, and “Nakodar” refers to the location of the atrocity. This day not only memorializes the students’ sacrifice but also stands as a broader condemnation of hate crimes and violations against the Sikh community.

Harder highlighted the day’s importance, noting, “Observing ‘Saka Nakodar Day’ allows us to uphold the democratic and human rights of all people. It is a reminder to continue our fight for truth, justice, and accountability for the victims and their families, even after more than 38 years.”

The recognition underscores the ongoing struggle for justice and the necessity of remembering such historical events to ensure they are not forgotten.
