Various groups join hands against politically patronized drugs abuse & trade in Punjab

Amritsar, Punjab (August 08, 2013): The campaign-cum-struggle against drugs abuse and trade in Punjab seems picking up the pace as several individuals and groups emphasized the need of coordinated and united efforts against the drugs manse that is spoiling the social fabric as well as lives of tens of thousand people in Punjab.

On August 05, 2013 a special event was organized as joint effort of Sikhs for Human Rights (SFHR) and Nasha Virodhi Manch (NVM). This seminar sort of event had a concentrated gathering comprising people who had travelled from various part of Punjab, in addition to representatives of various social, religious and political organizations, to take part in this event that was held at Virsa Vihar in Amritsar.

Giani Kewal Singh (Former Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib), Bibi Kiran Jot Kaur (Member SGPC), Dr. Shyam Sundar Deepti (Govt. Medical College, Amritsar), Balwant Singh Khera (Socialist Party of India), S. S. Chhena (Dean Faculty of Agriculture (Retd.), Khalsa College Amritsar) and Shahsi Kant (Former DGP – Prisons, and founder of Nasha Virodhi Manch) and Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema (Akali Dal Panch Pardhani) were the main speakers during the seminar who discussed the problem of drugs abuse and trade in detail. The learned speakers identified various causes behind the problem and suggested steps towards it’s solution. The stage was conducted by Parmjeet Singh, Editor of Sikh Siyasat News.

Nasha Virodhi Manch founder Sh. Shashi Kant called upon all like minded to join hands against drugs abuse and trade in Punjab. He disclosed a three-phase programme to fight the “narco politics” cartels being run by politicians and influential security personnel in Punjab. About this programme, Shashikant, said the Nasha Virodhi Manch would create awareness against drugs in the state for a year, which would be followed by non-cooperation under which there would be boycott of political parties. “The phase will continue for another 6-8 months, and if there is no improvement then we would hit the roads. We have to save our younger generation from drug abuse, it is killing them,” said the former top cop, adding that he would want every political party to make tackling the drug menace top agenda in their manifestos.

During his address Shashi Kant said that after mid-1990s politicians and security forces officials have encouraged drug smuggling in Punjab, given the huge financial gains from the illegal trade and reigns of the business were in the hands of a few leaders. However, he refrained from taking the names of politicians involved in drug smuggling.

Founder of Nasha Virdohi Manch, launched to make Punjab a drug-free state, Shashikant stressed on the need to create awareness against hazards of drugs and its longtime affect on society. Recalling an incident, he said when he was DGP (prisons) he had visited Kapurthala jail where an inmate told him that one kg heroin was traded in each big jail of Punjab everyday.

During this seminar, that stretched around three hours, Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra, Hardeep Singh Dibdiba, Dr. Charanjit Singh and Ginni Bhatia (Special Anti-Crime Bureau – Regd.), Sampuran Singh Cheema (American Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee), Gurwinder Singh Shampura (former Executive Member, SGPC), Manmohan Singh Sathiala (former MLA), Gursewak Singh Mohali, Prof. Avtar Singh Uppal, Dipak Babbar (Mission Agaaz), Surinder Singh Dubolia (SGPC), Sanjeev Rampal (Vice-President, District Congress Committee), Manmohan Singh Wadala, Gurinder Singh Bajwa, Kikkar Singh (SAD – Badal), Paramjit Singh (Sikh Youth of Punjab), Manmohan Singh Gumtala (People’s Party of Punjab), Ranjodh Singh Ghukkewali, Davinder Kaur Jhabal, Jaspreet Kaur (USA), Balwant Singh Gopala, Jagmohan Dyal Singh, Pippal Singh Zira, Bhai Mohkam Singh and Baldev Singh Sira also briefly shared their views.
