Tampering with Dr Ambedkar’s Statue Condemnable: Misl Satluj

MOHALI: Sardar Ajaypal Singh Brar, president of the Misal Satluj Party, has strongly condemned the tampering with a statue of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar in a village in Jalandhar. He described the incident as deeply distressing and a matter of serious concern that had hurt public sentiments.

Brar said Dr Ambedkar was not merely a leader of any particular section or community, but the architect of the Indian Constitution and a key figure in shaping the country’s democratic framework. Through his vision, he played a historic role in securing the right to equality, justice and a life of dignity for every citizen, including marginalised and disadvantaged communities.

He said the tampering with the statue could not be dismissed as a routine incident. Calling it a serious matter involving public sentiments, he said the Punjab government had a responsibility to bring those behind it to justice.

Brar demanded an impartial, thorough and time-bound investigation, along with strict action under the law against those found responsible. He said the inquiry should go beyond identifying the individuals who tampered with the statue and examine whether any conspiracy or other motive lay behind the incident.

“Anyone who targets statues or memorials of respected personalities does more than damage stone or metal. Such acts hurt society’s collective sentiments and challenge constitutional values,” he said, adding that those responsible should not be treated with leniency.

Brar appealed to people to maintain peace, restraint and communal harmony while expressing their anger over the incident. He said rumours, inflammatory statements and attempts to take the law into one’s own hands would only heighten social tensions.

“A true tribute to Dr Ambedkar lies in protecting his statues as well as following the constitutional path he showed us,” Brar said.

He added that the Punjab government must ensure that anyone who dishonours respected personalities or hurts public sentiments faces accountability under the law.
