Delhi (July 15, 2011): Thousands of Sikhs from North India attended Justice Rally and launched “Civil Disobedience Movement” at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to secure the release of Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar. A Letter Writing Campaign addressed to President of India demanding release of Professor Bhullar was launched. Participants of the rally appealed to every member of Sikh Nation to send at least one letter to the President of India to save Bhullar’s life.
The call for Civil Disobedience Movement is given by All India Sikh Students Federation (Peer Mohammad) and Sikhs For Justice (SFJ). A memorandum was also given to the President of India demanding “Unconditional Release” of Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar because Bhullar’s execution will be in violation of Article 21 of Constitution of India which prohibits taking of life and liberty without “due process of law”.
Addressing the Justice Rally, AISSF President Karnail Singh Peermohammad stated that Professor Bhullar’s case is unique because during custody, he was tortured to sign the confessional statement and was denied justice and fair trial. Despite a split Judgment of the Supreme Court, his conviction was not reversed by the President of India as mandated under Article 72 of the Constitution of India.
With the launching of “Letter Writing Campaign” AISSF and SFJ urged the public to clog the Postal Service of India by sending “unstamped” letters addressed to President of India demanding release of Bhullar. The letter writing campaign will burden the Government of India through “unstamped letters” and will put pressure on the President of India to order the release of Bhullar, added Peermohammad.
Addressing the rally, Babu Singh Dukhiya, President National 1984 Victims Justice and Welfare Society stated that there are double standards of justice in India. Bhullar has been given death sentence without a single witness while Kamal Nath, Jagdish Tytler, Amitabh Bachan, Sajjan Kumar and others who killed Sikhs in November 1984 are not convicted even though hundreds of witnesses have testified against them.
Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) announced that it will submit a memorandum to the Secretary General of UN on July 25, demanding intervention of the UN as per Resolution 62-149 of 2008 calling for abolition and moratorium on the use of death penalty. The campaign and rally to save Professor Bhullar has the support of World Coalition Against Death Penalty, American Civil Liberties Union and Amnesty International.
