SGPC Not to Show Dera Sirsa Pardon Records to Justice Ranjit Singh Commission

October 1, 2017 | By

Patiala: In a meeting held at Patiala yesterday (Sept. 30), the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) passed a ‘condemnation resolution’ against Justice Ranjit Singh Commission’s move to issue summons to the SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar to tender the records related to so-called pardon granted to the Dera Sauda Sirsa chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim by SGPC appointed Jathedars in 2015.

In a written release issued in Gurmukhi, the president alleged that the commission was working under ‘anti-Sikh mindset of the Congress party’ and he had hampered the reputation of the Gurdwara management body and the Akal Takht Sahib by issuing summons to SGPC president and SGPC appointed Jathedar of the Akal Takht Sahib.

The SGPC executive committee also passed a resolution ‘rejecting’ Justice Ranjit Singh Commission.

SGPC chief said that it was decided during the meeting that the records related to the controversial pardoning of the dera chief will not be tendered to the ‘Congress appointed commission’.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the SGPC was held at Patiala on Saturday (Sept. 30, 2017)

It is notable that Akal Takht Sahib had issued a Hukumnama agianst Dera Sauda Sirsa chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in May 2007 after he had attempted to personify himself as Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Later in September 2015 SGPC appointed Jathedars had unilaterally granted pardon to the controversial dera chief which had led to strong opposition from the Sikh masses. The ruling regime of SGPC which is under total control of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) had reportedly issued advertisements worth Rs. 90 lakhs to justify the pardoning of the dera chief. But the decision of pardon was later withdrawn as it was denounced by the global Sikh community.

In October 2015 an incident of Beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib took place in Bargari village and there were strong protests. The Punjab police had opened firing at Sikh sangat at Behbal Kalan village in which two Sikhs were killed. The then Punjab government led by SAD (Badal) had appointed a commission led by Justice Zora Singh to probe into the incident. The commission, however, failed to identify the culprit police personnel or recommend any concrete action against them.

After change of Government in 2017, the Congress party government led by Amarinder Singh scrapped the report of Justice Zora Singh Commission and appointed another commission led by Justice Ranjit Singh to re-probe the matter.

Recently, Justice Ranjit Singh Commission issued summons to SGPC chief asking him to produce the records related to granting pardon to the dera chief and later withdrawal of the same by SGPC appointed commission. Commission said that during the course of its probe it is found that the pardoning incident was also a cause of anger amongst the Sikh masses thus the related recording had become relevant to the ongoing probe.
