Don’t construct Sikh Genocide 1984 memorial in gurdwara complex, say Sarnas

New Delhi, India (June 10, 2013): According to certain media reports the Sarna brothers of SAD (Delhi) — in their first appearance since their defeat in the Delhi gurdwara polls — on June 09, 2013 said the Sikh Genocide 1984 memorial was not acceptable inside the Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib. Sarnas reportedly said that the memorial should be built at some other site.

Parmjit Singh Sarna objects to proposed Sikh genocide 1984 memorial

According to Indian Express (IE) Paramjit Singh Sarna and his brother Harinder Singh Sarna maintained that as per the traditions of Sikh religion, the memorial was not acceptable within gurdwara premises but have no objection if it was built at some other place.

“Building a memorial inside a gurdwara will disrespect the Guru in whose memory the gurdwara was built. Thus, we object to this” Paramjit Singh Sarna reportedly claimed.

According to Times of India (TOI), Paramjit Singh Sarna said: “We are ready to help the DSGMC if they build this memorial at some other place. We had got a master plan made for the construction of a memorial in a park close to Gurudwara Majnu Ka Teela for the purpose. The plan was already under process. The new plan is just a political gimmick and nothing else”.

Sarna’s objections are considered to be politically motivated because Sarna Bothers are known for openly aligning and supporting the Congress Party.

It is notable that thousands of innocent Sikhs were massacred in Delhi and elsewhere in India during first week of November 1984. The massacres that took place during initial days of November 1984 were part of a coordinated and wider plan of Sikh genocide. Many Indian politicians belonging to Congress (I) party face allegations of orchestrating the genocide. These culprits are being protected and patronages by the Indian state for last three decades.
