New Delhi: There are reports in media the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led government in the Center has decided to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe those cases related to November 1984 Sikh massacre in Delhi, which were closed by the police and did not reach courts.

A report by NDTV reports unnamed source as saying that the official announcement about the SIT will be made after elections in Delhi are over. The report further added that its members will be decided in next three days.

Justice (retired) G P Mathur panel, set up in December 2014 following protests from Sikh groups and others about the closure of November 1984 anti-Sikh massacre cases, is learnt to have favoured reinvestigation of many important cases where crucial evidence was overlooked.

The report says there are 225 such cases which need a “relook”. In its report, the committee has said that in many cases crucial evidence was overlooked and there should be a fresh probe.

Mathur Panel, which was constituted in December last year, had a three-month term but submitted its report within 45 days.

Reports say that the committee has pointed out that not much can be done in cases which have been disposed by various courts, but fresh probe needs to be carried out in cases where despite evidence the police instead of filing chargesheets went ahead with closing the cases. Sources say these involve cases against Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler.

The families of the victims have alleged that Delhi police ignored evidence and witness accounts under political pressure and closed these cases.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh had recently admitted that the November 1984 massacres were “genocide” and assured the victims that government will bring the culprits to justice. It is notable that Sikhs were targeted and subjected to genocidal violance in throughout India in November 1984 after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

It is notable that Aam Aadmi Party government led by Arvind Kejriwal had recommended Special Investigation Team (SIT) to re-probe 1984 Sikh massacre related cases in Delhi.
