Digital Repression: Indian Authorities Shut Down Satluj TV’s Online Presence in India

May 16, 2024 | By

Chandigarh: The Indian government has taken steps to block access to the social media platforms of Satluj TV, launched by journalist Surinder Singh Talking Punjab. As a result, the YouTube channel of Satluj TV is now inaccessible in India, with users being shown a notice citing compliance with a legal request. This move comes amidst a broader crackdown on Sikh social media channels, with hundreds already blocked.

As the notice by YouTube suggests, India has justified the censorship by citing “national security” concerns. It is interesting to note that the government has failed to follow its own rules (rule 7, 8 and 9 of IT Rules 2009), which require  notices and the opportunity for affected parties to be heard.

The blocking of these channels is seen as part of a larger pattern of “digital repression” targeting the Sikh community. Many view it as an attempt to stifle dissent and control the narrative. The blocking of Sikh social media channels has intensified notably during the COVID-19 pandemic and has further escalated following the widespread farmers’ protests of 2020.

The move has sparked debate and concern about freedom of expression and the rights of minority communities in India.
