Amritsar, Punjab (May 20, 2012): While Damdami Taksal laid the foundation stone in the memory of Shaheed Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Shaheed Bhai Amrik Singh former President AISSF, Shaheed General Shubeg Singh and countless others Sikhs who were martyred in June 1984, All India Sikh Students Federation (PeerMohammad) and “Sikhs for Justice” (SFJ) a human rights group, Under the directions and patronage of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, has launched “1984 Yes It’s Genocide” campaign to collect ‘Million Signatures” in support of “1984 – Genocide Petition” to be filed before the United Nations.

“1984 – Genocide Petition” with million signatures will be filed in November 2012 before “UN High Commissioner for Human Rights” by AISSF and SFJ with the support of Sikhs across the world. The petition will demand the UN to investigate the systematic, intentional and deliberate killing of Sikhs carried out throughout India during the first week of November 1984 which has been effectively covered up by the successive Indian Governments as “anti-Sikh riots” and to recognize the same as “Genocide” under UN Convention on Genocide.

Based on the gravity, scale and specially the organized nature of the attacks on Sikhs during November 1984 and discovery of new evidence containing mass graves, ruined villages, burnt Gurudwaras (Sikh Temples) and other traces of Sikh population annihilated during November 1984, the “1984 – Genocide Petition” to the UN argues that the “the intentional and deliberate nature of the attacks on Sikh lives, properties and places of worship during November 1984 makes them crime of “Genocide” as per Article 2 of the U.N. Convention on Genocide”.

On May 05, 2012, Sri Akal Takhat Sahib issued a historic edict directing All India Sikhs Students Federation (AISSF) and “Sikhs for Justice” (SFJ) a human rights group to file “1984 – Genocide Petition” before the United Nations. The edict issued under the signature of Giani Gurbachan Singh, Jathedar Sri Akal Takhat Sahib also directs the community to support “A Million Signature Campaign” to support the “1984 – Genocide Petition” before UN. Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, which is supporting the prosecution of perpetrators of those who organized killing of Sikhs, has already in July 2010 declared the massacre of Sikhs in November 1984 as “Genocide”.

According to AISSF President Karnail Singh Peermohammad, Sri Akal Takhat’s edict to pursue the “Genocide Petition” before UN came at a time when successive governments in India have failed to investigate and prosecute the leaders who organized the killing of thousands of Sikhs during November 1984 and Government have given an unofficial “Amnesty” to police officials led by KPS Gill, who killed more than 50,000 Sikhs in fake encounters between 1984 – 1998.

During “1984 Yes It’s Genocide” campaign AISSF will visit all districts of the State of Punjab to amass the signature in support of the petition and also to gather information about the Sikhs killed in fake encounters between 1984-1998. AISSF members will also visit all 18 states where Sikhs were subject to genocidal attacks during November 1984 added Peermohammad.

A large number of victims and survivors of Sikh Genocide led by Bibi Jagdish Kaur a prime witness in Sajjan Kumar’s case participated in “1984 Yes It’s Genocide” and avowed to hold congregations at all Five Takhats of Sikhism to collect more than “million signatures” in support of the “1984 – Genocide Petition”. To accomplish this, “1984 – Yes, it’s Genocide” a float will be built which will carry widows and victims of Sikh Genocide (1984 – 1998) to participate in the congregations on Takhats, added Bibi Jagdish Kaur.

A delegation of AISSF members led by Karnail Singh Peermohammad along with the widows and victims of 1984 Sikh Genocide led by Bibi Jagdish Kaur will go to Geneva, Switzerland in November 2012 to present the “1984 – Genocide Petition” to UNHCR.

In a statement issued from New York, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Legal Advisor to Sikhs For Justice, stated that “1984 – Yes, it’s Genocide” campaign launched under the directions and patronage of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib will also be taken to United States, Canada and countries of European Union to collect signatures in support of “1984 – Genocide Petition”. A website (www.1984YesitsGenocide.org) will be launched to connect the Sikh community worldwide and will also target other communities to garner international support especially of Jewish people who have undergone genocide at the hands of Nazis added attorney Pannun.

Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad informed Sikh Siyasat that Akali Dal Panch Pardhani Chairman Bhai Daljit Singh Bitu, Damdami Taksal’s former spokesperson Bhai Mohkam Singh, Singh Sahib Giani Partap Singh, Sikh Students Federation President Bhai Parmjeet Singh G and Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjpur also participated in the signature campaign and signed the petition.
