The sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib Ji has remained a major political issue in Punjab since the 2015 Bargari incident, which was followed by the Behbal Kalan police firing and a series of other consequential events that continue to shape Punjab’s political landscape.
In response, the Aam Aadmi Party-led government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has moved a new bill in state assembly introducing stricter punishments for acts of sacrilege. The legislation comes at a time when public discontent with the government is rising, and the ruling party appears eager to bolster its report card by showcasing fulfilled promises.
