Attack on Sikh in Karnataka for Wearing Kirpan: Full Copy of FIR with Punjabi Translation

Chandigarh: A shocking incident of attack on a Sikh man by a mob in Karnataka has come into light. Victim Avtar Singh, 25, works as a JCB driver with a private company in Karnataka. On the evening of 19 May after finishing his job he was going to an ATM in village Kodla village (Gulbarga) when a mob of local Hindu residents stopped him. Being an Amritdhari Sikh, Avtar Singh was wearing a Kirpan to which the mob objected.

The mob had attacked Avtar Singh, brutally thrashed him and kept him confined in Panchayat Ghar of the village. The police had registered FIR number 144/2018 at Police Station Sedam under sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to Karnataka’s Minorities Commission member S. Baljeet Singh the police have added section 307 (attempt to murder) in the FIR and six persons are arrested in this matter (May 29 update).

On the request of Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), Pandit Rao Dharennavar who is from Karnataka and is Assistant Professor at Government College, Chandigarh has translated the relevant portions of the FIR in Punjabi. Pandit Rao Dharennavar has expressed shock and sorrow over the incident and said that he would visit to Gulbarga to aware the people about the Sikh faith and the Kankars and importance of Kirpan in Sikhi.
