Dal Khalsa to Badal, Amarinder: Stop politicking, save Bhullar

October 4, 2011 | By

Amritsar (October 01, 2011): Urging chief minister and former chief minister to stop politicking and save a life of a person who is on death row, the Dal Khalsa has asked for the assembly resolution on Oct 3 (Monday) for commutation of death penalty to life imprisonment for Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar.

Party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh in his communiqué to Captain Amarinder Singh, president PPCC and Member, Legislative Assembly urged him to do a rethink and to initiate fresh efforts for such a path-breaking and pioneering resolution, perhaps for the first time in the Punjab Assembly.

We believe that it was still not late in the day for you (Amrinder) to take up the issue and ensure that a resolution was tabled and passed in the Punjab Assembly, said he.

Interestingly, the letter says “the scion of the erstwhile state of Patiala is on test of his own making”. It further reads ‘men of words do not shy behind what others say and do. It would unbecoming for Maharaja Amarinder Singh Patiala to go back on his public call for commutation’.

bhullar free bhullarDisagreeing with Amarinder Singh’s viewpoint that “resolution in the assembly is of no use legally as the matter is sub-judice, he said notwithstanding the legality, such resolutions add to the chorus of compassion and the moral question in a politically-surcharged debate”.

While pointing out that political wrangling was available aplenty on many other issues, he said there was absolutely no point in bringing in the question of political motives of the ruling Akali Dal in introducing the resolution (referring to the statement of Amrinder asking Badal to come clean on the issue).

In a separate missive to CM Parkash Singh Badal, while welcoming his stand against capital punishment to Prof Bhullar, the Dal Khalsa leader said “though only 48 hours are left, we believe that you need to show political will through a determined political outreach”.

Taking a jibe at him, he said your political machinery did not make effective inroads into the minds of the Congressmen despite you supported Captain Amarinder Singh on the waters issue when the Bill to annul all past agreements was to be passed in 2004.

“Similarly, SAD’s alliance partner, the BJP was known for its anti-Sikh, anti-minority approach and your “friendship” with them has not been able to persuade them to take up any matter of Punjab interest. Sikh opinion stridently views this as the major pitfall in governance by the Shiromani Akali Dal”, reads the letter.

Dal Khalsa asked Mr Badal that the Punjab government led by his party should correct the glaring mistake made in an affidavit regarding the status of Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar.

The organization also slams opposition leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Punjab BPJP leadership for opposing the proposal.
