Delhi Committee plans to ‘inaugurate’ Sikh genocide 1984 memorial on June 12

New Delhi, India (June 10, 2013): It is learnt that the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has prepared the design for the proposed memorial for the victims of Sikh Genocide 1984. The memorial is proposed to be raised inside the Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib complex near Indian Parliament.
It may be recalled that earlier, the New Delhi Municipal Council had served a notice against the construction of the memorial maintaining that the proposed memorial it was an “illegal structure”.

As per media reports the DSGMC general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa told reporters on June 09, 2013 that the memorial was in complete compliance with building by-laws.
“According to the architect of the memorial, Rajiv Gandhi, the structure’s diameter and height will be in conformity with the by-laws” Indian Express (IE) has reported.
As per information a lotus-shaped metal disc or dial will be placed in middle, signifying the sun. The dial will be a floating on water, symbolising life. The design has been conceptualised on a mound.

“Water will flow in from all sides in to the structure of the dial, where names of martyrs will be engraved. Metallic lotus petals will be on the dial and in the middle will be a laser beam that will go up to 300 feet in sky”, a IE news report reads.
“Water, fire, sun and earth together will be symbol of life and the memorial will be symbol of life in continuation. Around the dial will be a sitting area where audio and video depiction of martyrs stories will be played,” the architect of the memorial reportedly said.
Previously it had been reported by various media sections that the Jathedars of five Sikh Takhats would lay ‘foundation stone’ of the memorial on June 12 but now, the Indian Express, has reported that DSGMC has planned to inaugurate the memorial on June 12.
