Mohali (May 31, 2010): Punjab Police personnel, in large numbers, are deployed at historic ground of Chapparchiri, in wake of March call by Sikh nationalist party, Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani). Panch Pardhani, that adopts democratic course to pursue Sikh cause, has announced to organize a “Holocaust Memorial March” to mark 26th anniversary of Third Holocaust of Sikh History. The march is scheduled to begin on 1 June from Chpparchiri. The site is seemed to have been selected for its affiliation to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, who established the first Sikh rule in Punjab, three hundred years ago.

Punjab Police has made large scale arrangements to prevent the march, and has already arrested half a dozen top leaders of Panch Pardhani. Many workers are also taken under custody by police from various districts of Punjab. Harpal Singh Cheema, who has managed to evade arrest, informed SikhSiyasat Network that there is no change in their schedule. Therefore, tension is expected to remain high for coming days.

Political observers say that Panch Pardhani is attempting to find political space for itself, through their proclaimed democratic means. But the Government and intelligence agencies are pro-active against them, as they fear the rise of nationalist consciousness among Sikh masses, which may lead to any ‘80s like situation.

“Action is clearly motivated by politics. Few weeks back Government (Ruling Party) was at its’ toes to receive a similar march (Sirhind Fateh March), but this time they are preventing this march for political reasons.” said Ranjodh Singh of Mohali, who had participated in “Sirhind Fateh March” on 12 and 13 May, and is willing to participate in “Holocaust Memorial March”.
