Amritsar (March 16, 2011): Expressing their grave concern over the custodial death of Sohan Singh in Amritsar interrogation centre, the leaders of the Khalsa Action Committee Mohkam Singh, Gurtej Singh, Kanwar Pal Singh, Harpal Singh Cheema said the police was still practicing the old brute methods of custodial torture and illegal arrests.
Nothing has changed since former DGP KPS Gill’s time. Punjab is still a police state. The government of the day would have to withdraw impunity to forces if it was serious to revive the respect for human rights in Punjab, they said.
It was evident that Sohan Singh had died because of extensive torture in custody and the story of his suicide was enacted by concerned police officers as cover up to save their skin, said they.
The State must know that “militants have human rights” and moreover Sohan Singh’s guilt was not proven in court of law. “His mysterious death in police custody raises many eyebrows and his killers must be brought to book”.
Although the government has ordered the judicial probe, yet we urge the Chief Minister to suspend the concerned police personal till the inquiry report is not submitted.
