Ludhiana: Sikh organisations, under the banner of Bandi Singhs Rihai Sangharsh Committee, staged a successful shut-down in Ludhaina city today. Sangharsh committee leaders and activists formed various teams to ensure complete shut down across the city.
The shut down was called by the Sangharsh Committee in support of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa. Bapu Surat Singh is on hunger strike since January 16 demanding permanent release of Sikh political prisoners who have completed mandatory terms of their sentences. During past five months he was twice hospitalised
by the Punjab police.
Local sources said that the shut down was successful as markets across Ludhiana remained closed. Sangharh Committee leaders Bhai Mohkam Singh (United Akali Dal), Advo. Harpal Singh Cheema (Sikhs for Human Rights) Jaskaran Singh Kahan Singh Wala (Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar), Jaspal Singh Heiran (Rozana Pehredar), Wassan Singh Jafarwal (UAD), R. P. Singh (Akhand Kirtani Jatha) and Jasvir Singh Khandur monitored the ground situation to ensure peaceful and successful shut down. On the other hand Gurdeep Singh Bathinda and Dr. Manjinder Singh Jandi reportedly stayed at the house of Bapu Surat Singh to ensure that the police could not hospitalise him against his will.
Sangharsh Committee has warned to harden it’s stance in wake of ‘inaction’ of Punjab government to secure release of concerned Sikh political prisoners.
