Paris, France (May 15, 2013): It is learnt that amid various protests by Sikhs in the UK, France and India against the death sentence to Sikh political prisoner Professor Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, three Sikhs of France have been sitting on hunger strike since May 8 at a Paris Gurdwara.

According to Times of India (TOI): [t]he three Sikhs who are on hunger strike in Paris are – Rajbir Singh Tung, Iqbal Singh Patti and Karamjit Singh Pedro.

Rajbir Singh Tung reportedly said since French government didn’t permit for sitting on hunger strike in public place, they chose a Gurdwara to launch their agitation.

“We are on 11-day hunger strike after which I intend to visit India and continue hunger strike in Delhi,” said Iqbal Singh. They had even handed over a memorandum of their demand to the Indian embassy officials in Paris,” he added.

According to TOI: “[w]hile expressing gratitude towards Tung and others for extending support for the cause of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, his wife Navneet Kaur said: ‘I wonder why the Indian government is not releasing Bhullar even after international pressure’.”

Prof. Bhullar faces imminent threat of execution in India and reports suggest that he could be hanged in a secret manner by the Indian state. Recently, India has executed two death sentences in secrecy where the state announces the fact of execution only after hanging the persons to be executed.

Prof. Bhullar’s family is a victim state sponsored terrorism; as two from the family were subjected to permanent enforced disappearance by Punjab police in 1991, while others in the family, including women, have suffered physical and mental torture.

Prof. Bhullar himself is a victims of prejudice of Indian state system, including judiciary, against the Sikhs. According to Bhai Mandhir Singh, Secretary general of Akali Dal Panch Pardhani, Prof. Bhullar is sentenced to death because he was a Sikh; otherwise the case was legally so unfounded that he should have been acquitted by the trial court.

“Death sentence to Prof. Bhullar – and his suspected execution despite all efforts by Sikhs and other people of conscience, is a clear proof that Sikhs are slaves in India”, he added.
