Prof. Bhullar discharged by TADA court in Batala case

Amritsar: A TADA court in Amritsar today discharged Sikh Political Prisoner Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar in a 23 years old TADA case. The court heard arguments of prosecution and defence on chargesheet moved by the police against Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar in Batala TADA case on April 1.

Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, counsel of Prof. DPS Bhullar, told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone that the court refused to accept the chargesheet moved by the police against Prof. Bhullar in this case.

He said that the case documents (copy available with the Sikh Siyasat News) reveal that the case pertains to an alleged police encounter in which two Sikhs were shot dead by the Batala police. They were identified as Gurmej Singh alias Geja and Joga Singh, both residents of Vero Nangal village.

A case under Section 307, 34 of the IPC and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act, 3, 4, 5 of TADA and 4, 5 of the Explosive Act was registered at Sadar police station in Batala in 1992.

Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar was named in the case in February 1995. He was under the custody of Delhi police at that time. There is no direct evidence or witness against Prof. Bhullar. According to police file a person had disclosed before the police that ‘Sikh militants’ used to visit his house to take meals and on the day of 1992 incident (related to the present case) Prof. DPS Bhullar had visited his house. On the basis of this statement the police has named Prof. Bhullar in this case.
