Washington, United States (June 11, 2014): World Sikh Council – America Region (WSC-AR) condemns the actions of all parties who drew swords that resulted in uncontrolled outbursts inside the Darbar Sahib Complex at Akal Takhat Sahib in the midst of the 30 year commemoration of the Indian government planned attack on the Complex in June 1984. The Sikh Faith and its way of living do not allow such behavior anywhere let alone in a place of worship. These actions have been further propagated on the mass media and go against the teachings and tenants of the Sikh Faith, regarding peace and mutual respect.
The highlight of outrage and concern regarding the events of 30 years ago, which are being commemorated all over the world this month, clearly demonstrate that justice has still not been served. However, this has now been turned into a mass media and shameful exhibition however perpetrated. As a result, the original action of three decades ago and the continued suffering of the victims and the injustices against Sikhs still remain open and the demand for an independent investigation of it will be further delayed.
Reports from Siri Darbar Sahib Complex indicate that there are questions regarding those that started the recent incident and involvement of parties they may have belonged to. The circumstances continue to point towards the handiwork of some undercover government agencies. This incident needs to be thoroughly and independently investigated to determine if this is an act of a third agency, which seemingly has tried to create a situation for the defamation of the Sikh community.
The authority exercising management control of Siri Darbar Sahib Complex, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC), must be held accountable for their actions or lack thereof. Sikhs demand a full inquiry into these outrageous events and request that all responsible, regardless of their position, be held accountable for their disgraceful actions. The SGPC management should take immediate steps to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future and providing effective assurances to the Sikh community worldwide.
Our sincere hope is that the Sikh community in Punjab and across the world recognizes the challenges that face us as a community and will work together as one to resolve our afflictions.
The World Sikh Council – America Region (WSC-AR) is the umbrella organization representative of Sikhs in the United States. It is an elected body of Sikh Gurdwaras and institutions.
