Sikh Nation honoured kin of Indira Gandhi’s assassins at Akal Takht

Amritsar, Punjab (October 31, 2013): The SGPC along with Dal Khalsa and  Akali Dal Panch Pardani today observed the martyrdom day of Bhai Beant Singh, who assassinated late Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India 29 years ago on this day.

At a function held within Darbar Sahib complex, the head of Akal Takht Gaini Gurbachan Singh, Damdami Taksal head Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, Panch Pardani working head Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema and Dal Khalsa spokesperson Bhai Kanwar Pal Singh honoured Sarbjit Singh, the son of Beant Singh.

A kirpan and silver plaque was presented to Sarbjit, on which it was engraved “In honour of Shaheed Beant Singh, the brave soldier of Khalsa Panth, who embraced martyrdom to uphold the historic traditions and glory of the Panth by avenging the sacrilege of Darbar Sahib”.

Satwant Singh the son of Shaheed Kehar Singh and Waryam Singh, brother of Shaheed Satwant Singh were also honoured at Akal Takht.

Notably, while Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who were in the security ring of Indira Gandhi, shot her down from close range Oct 31, 1984, Kehar Singh was linked to the murder conspiracy. Beant Singh was shot dead by Indira Gandhi’s security guards on the spot.

The gathering urged the SGPC to construct the memorial in memory of all the three in the Golden Temple Complex in any shape and at any place. As the sacrifice of Beant Singh, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh was meant to uphold the rich traditions and glory of Darbar Sahib and Akal Takht, it was the desire of the Sikh Panth that SGPC should build a memorial in their memory at suitable place within the complex. The resolution to this effect was adopted on the occasion. The heads of Damdami Taksal, Dal Khalsa and Panch Pardani besides the kin of all the three martyrs signed the copy of the resolution, which was handed over to Jathedar of Akal Takht for implementation.

Jathedar Akal Takht spoke on the occasion and eulogized their sacrifice. Paying tributed to them, he said their act was in accordance with historic traditions of the Khalsa Panth.

Dal Khalsa and Panch Pardani spokesperson while talking with media said they would relentlessly pursue the struggle to secure the right to self-determination for the Sikhs.

Dal Khalsa leader Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib, Sarbjit Singh Ghuman, Baba Baljit Singh Daduwal, Baldev Singh Sirsa and SGPC officials Roop Singh, Daljit Singh Bedi and Manager Darbar Sahib were also present.
