In December 2025, the SGPC-appointed acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, along with other Singh Sahiban, issued a directive banning the portrayal of Sikh Gurus, Shaheeds, and Gursikhs in films—whether through human actors or animation, cartoons, or similar media.

This question has been debated within the Sikh community for over a century. Sikh scholars and intellectuals have repeatedly cautioned against using dramatized representations of Sikh history as a tool for preaching or propagation.
