SPECIAL REPORT Panj Pyare directs SGPC to relieve Jatehdars from service of Takhats

October 24, 2015 | By

Amritsar: SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, this evening, unilaterally announced to reject the Gurmata passed by Akal Takhat Sahib Panj Piyare directing “executive committee” of the SGPC to relieve Takhat Jathedars from all their services.

Earlier today the Panj Piyaras, namely Bhai Satnam Singh Khalsa, Bhai Major Singh, Bhai Tarlok Singh, Bhai Satnam Singh and Bhai Mangal Singh adopted a Gurmata directing the SGPC executive committee to relieve Takhat Jathedars after the Jathedars failed to offer their explanation regarding their September 24 announcement to grant pardon to controversial dera sauda Sirsa chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim for his 2007 anti-Sikh activities.

A few hours after the Panj Pyaras issue the directions of the SGPC executive committee, the SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar unilaterally declared to reject it.

Not a decision of SGPC: says Sukhdev Singh Bhaur

However, the SGPC executive committee member Sukhdev Singh Bhaur said that the SGPC’s decision could only be announced after executive committee meetings.

“This may be SGPC chief’s personal views, but it could not be termed as SGPC’s decision” he told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone. “SGPC has a process to take and announce decisions and any such decision could only be taken in SGPC executive committee meeting”, he added.

He said that the SGPC executive committee had, on Oct. 22, refused to put stamp on Avtar Singh Makkar’s decision to suspend Panj Piyaras and the SGPC chief was asked to talk the Panj Piyaras and reconsider his decision.

S. Bhaur clearly said that SGPC executive committee neither endorsed SGPC chief Avtar Singh’s decision to suspend Panj Piyaras, nor it gave any rights to the SGPC chief to take final decision on Panj Piyara’s suspension.

Gurmata was adoped as per Panthic principles: Bhai Satnam Singh

On the other hand Bhai Satnam Singh Khalsa, head of Akal Takhat Sahib Panj Pyaras, said that the Panj Pyaras appeared before the Guru Granth Sahib at Akal Takhat Sahib in their capacity as “Panj Pyaras”, performed the Ardas and then waiting for Jathedar. When Jathedars did not appear at the Akal Takhat Sahib Panj Pyaras discussed the matter and passed the Gurmata as per Panthic traditions. He said that when they (Panj Pyaras) act in their capacity as Panj Pyaras then neither SGPC chief nor any other person or organizaitons has any right to suspend them.

“We took this decision as per Panthic principles and acted in our capacity as Panj Pyaras, not in our individual capacity or in the capacity of SGPC employees. So SGPC has no right to suspend Panj Pyaras”, he said.
