The students sought the release of these prisoner saying they were not criminals, but had political reasons behind their conviction. They also condemned the suppressive action of the police with regard to the Mohali protest and appealed to people to stand for the release of the prisoners.

“Gurbaksh Singh has been sitting on an indefinite hunger strike since November 14 for the release of these Sikh political prisoners. However, neither the state nor the Centre has responded positively on the matter.

Instead he was arrested at midnight by a Punjab Police squad dressed in plain clothes and posing as supporters of the protest, “said Sachinder Pal, SFS general secretary.

Emphasizing that there are over 100 persons imprisoned for cases related to the militant movement in Punjab, SFS president, Arishdeep, said the root cause of the problem lay in the unjust Center-state relations and demand for greater autonomy for the states.

“A similar phenomenon is observed in other parts of the country, whether it is the issues of Right to Self Determination in Kashmir and North-Eastern Region, or the oppression of tribals struggling against the neo-colonial model of development in central India,” said Arishdeep.

Raising slogans for the release of political prisoners in Punjab, the students voiced their decision to fight for greater democratic space in the country.

They asserted the government could no longer suppress dissidents by prosecuting them under laws.
