A campaign by the Conservative Party to install a statue of Hindu preacher Mohandas Gandhi in London’s Parliament Square has found many dissenters, ranging from Labour leaders to Dalit activists, Sikh NGOs, the founder of the Indo-British Heritage Trust, and even the late Winston Churchill, once leader of the same party which is now spearheading demands for a new Gandhi idol.

Earlier this week William Hague, the Foreign Secretary and George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, visiting India announced a statue of Mahatma Gandhi would be erected in Parliament Square next year.

Gandhi remains a deeply ambiguous figure: a fervent Hindu who advocated religious harmony; a believer in the caste system who deplored "untouchability"; and an anti-colonialist who was willing to compromise with the British empire. This renders him open to appropriation by different interests, some progressive, some retrograde. But we should not allow a statue in Parliament Square to blandly entrench a historical amnesia and diminish a venal and violent present.
