Legal representatives for a class of commercial drivers have filed an emergency order to prevent the California Department of Motor Vehicles from canceling nearly 20,000 commercial driver's licenses, an action that threatens to devastate the livelihoods of immigrant and working-class families.
Late yesterday, the Sikh Coalition, along with co-counsel at Asian Law Caucus and Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP, filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA-DMV).
House Resolution 841 (H.Res. 841) introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman David G. Valadao (R–CA). The resolution seeks to formally recognize and commemorate the 1984 Sikh Genocide, marking a significant step in international acknowledgment of one of India’s darkest chapters.
Various Sikh groups in the United States, including the Sikh Coalition, have urged the California Assembly to pass Senate Bill 509 (SB 509), which seeks to counter transnational repression and provide stronger protections for diaspora communities.
A number of US based Sikh organizations applaud the introduction of SB 509, a California state bill to combat transnational repressionincluding transnational repression by the government of India that continues to threaten U.S.-based Sikhs.
A number of interfaith human rights and activists groups have written to United States Embassy (Kabul) Chargé d’Affaires Ross Wilson and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative in Afghanistan about persecution of Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan.
The Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement submitted a letter on behalf of 52 Gurdwaras (Sikh houses of worship) to the California Department of Education, the Instructional Quality Commission, and the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Advisory Committee in favor of Sikhism’s meaningful inclusion in California’s Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum.
