The March 25, 2020 massacre of Sikhs at Gurdwara Har Rai Sahib in Kabul, Afghanistan sent shockwaves through the global Sikh community, yet the violence was not the only shocking thing about the vicious attack.
For over 4 decades, the Sikh community in Afghanistan has suffered war-like conditions. They have endured barbaric attacks resulting in the loss of loved ones and having their religious freedom stifled. Thirty years ago, the population of Sikhs in Afghanistan was said to be around 250,000, but after decades of conflict and massacre, many have sought asylum in other countries and the community is thought to have been reduced to about 120 families.
After the attacks on March 25, 2020, in the Gurdwara Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji in Kabul, the Sikh Diaspora moved swiftly to condemn the persons and groups responsible.
A number of interfaith human rights and activists groups have written to United States Embassy (Kabul) Chargé d’Affaires Ross Wilson and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative in Afghanistan about persecution of Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan.
The Islamic State (ISIL/ISIS) has imposed a 10-day ultimatum for all Sikhs to leave Afghanistan. This comes in the wake of a recent attack on a Gurdwara Sahib in Kabul on March 25, which left 25 Sikhs dead.
The US Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) has expressed deep concerns about the safety of Sikhs in Afghanistan.
India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered a case with regard to attack on Sikh Gurdwara Sahib in Kabul, Afghanistan.
This is in response to the write-up in 'The Tribune' by K N Pandita on CAA with reference to the horrific terror strike at a historic Gurdwara- Guru’s place- in Afghanistan, killing 25 innocent Sikh worshippers. The author seems to justify the controversial citizenship amendment legislation in the context of this attack.
