United Sikhs’ activism prevented bill requiring Sikh operators to provide hair sample

An update by the United Sikhs says the Drug Free Commercial Driver Act of 2013 (H.R. 3403) was a bill proposed on October 30, 2013 by Congressman Eric "Rick" Crawford (R-AR) who introduced the Drug Free Commercial Driver Act of 2013. The bill proposed to allow motor carriers to force a Sikh operator to provide a hair sample.

Reforms to Federal Racial Profiling Guidance Continue to Negatively Impact Sikh Community: United Sikhs

United Sikhs has expressed deep disappointment over the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) revisions to the federal racial profiling guidance. California,USA: On Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 8:40 a.m., Labh Singh Nigah, 55-years-old, was walking in Sierra Linda Park when he was stabbed to death. Singh, a resident of Oxnard, was killed shortly after dropping off his son to his elementary school.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s office writes to Dept. of Corrections in Sikh Turban removal case

New York, USA: Mr. Gurbhej Singh Sandhu, an elderly Sikh gentleman, had his religious freedom violated by the New York City Department of Correction (DOC). Mr.Sandhu visited Rikers Island Correctional Facility on numerous occasions since February 2012 to meet with his son, who was serving a sentence at the facility. Mr.Sandhu was made to remove his turban on every occasion he went to meet his son at Rikers Island, including on November 13, 2013.

Legal Victory: Belgian Supreme Court overturns ban on turban in GO school

St Truiden, Belgium: The Belgian Conseil d’Etat has upheld the freedom of religion of Sikh students by overturning the ban on the Sikh Turban in a GO school, which is part of a large group of schools attended by many Sikh students in the Flemish part of Belgium.

United Sikhs want Kirpan to be accommodated at California Courts

United Sikhs took Gursant Singh’s case and issued demand letters to the Court Executive Officer, Ms. Mary Beth Todd and Judge Susan. E. Greene of the court, requesting religious accommodations for initiated Sikhs carrying kirpans into their courthouse. The letters explained the significance of the kirpan to Sikhs and cited numerous examples of other government buildings and successful cases where accommodations for kirpans were granted.

Another Sikh Identity Victory on eve of 9/11 Anniversary

Raleigh, North Carolina (September 12, 2014): The Personal Defense & Handgun Safety Center, a shooting range and gun shop in Raleigh, North Carolina, prominently displayed a poster with the title "Are you prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse?" The poster contained images meant to scare the general population and depicted "scary" characters. Unfortunately, two of "zombies" wore turbans and sported beards, easily confusable for Sikhs.
