Thapar University quashed Punjab students quota; SYP and students bodies oppose the move

April 21, 2012 | By

Patiala/Amritsar, Punjab (April 21, 2012): Raising its voice against Thapar University (TU)  for abolishing the Punjab quota, the ‘Sikh Youth of Punjab’ (SYP), youth Organization affiliated with Dal Khalsa organization, on  Friday slammed TU and said that this decision of the university was  biased and contrary to the ‘son of the soil’ theory.
In a statement here today, youth body’s chief Ranbir Singh and spokesperson Prabhjot Singh said, “The University is located on land belonging to Punjab. The management, under no pretext, can refuse to give quota to the sons of the soil.”
They said that any decision that ruins the future of Punjabi students or deprives them of quality education was unacceptable to them and should be roll backed.
“If TU says that there is dearth of talent in Punjab, it is a failure of all the successive governments and a blow on the state’s education system. If at all there is no talent coming up, the Punjabgovernment must do something to improve the education system,” he said.
Acknowledging the efforts of the chief minister in taking up the matter with the Union minister Kapil Sibal, they said the government should exert its full pressure on the management of the TU to ensure restoration of the 50% quota.
They expressed their solidarity with the student’s bodies who were demonstrating their opposition against the management’s “illogical and stubborn” attitude.
The youth body hails the Punjab government for objecting to the UPA’s proposal for the NCTC. We hope that the response of SAD should be based on certain values and principles instead of blindly following alliance partner as state’s under the BJP rule are acknowledged violators of the rightful aspirations of their people.

Meanwhile, various students bodies have started opposing move of Thapar University administration. A delegation of students led by Sikh Students Federation leader Gurpartap Singh were planning to submit a memorandum to TU administration demanding revival of Punjab quota.
