The railways hiked fares of both in passenger fares (14.2%) and freight (6.5%) on Friday, leading to furious uproar. The Modi-led government at the Centre supported the hike saying that it is in fact 'bitter pill' that the aam aadmi must put up with. However opponents on the other hand alleged that the Centre was already failing in delivering its election-time promise of 'achche din'.
According to media reports Punjab got two major promises from the central government on Thursday — an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jalandhar, and a ‘smart city’ development plan for Amritsar and its satellite towns.

It is learnt that Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann) has decided to contest the forthcoming Punjab Assembly by-polls. Information in this regards was released by Mann Dal's Secretary General Jaswant Singh Mann after a meeting of the Sangrur and Barnala district units of the party on June 19.
