Sikh bodies urge United Nations (UN) to set up probe tribunal for crimes committed by Indian forces in June 1984

New York, United States (June 11, 2014): It is learnt that six Sikh organizations have submitted a complaint to United Nations’ human rights body seeking a tribunal to investigate crimes committed by the Indian government during June 1984 army attack on Darbar Sahib and other Sikh Gurdwaras. They have also urged the UN to condemn the army attack.

The plaint, submitted to Ivan Simonovic, assistant secretary general of human rights at UN, said with the recent revelations about UK’s involvement in Indian Army’s attack- that was codenamed as “Operation Bluestar”, it becomes even more pressing that UN must intervene and investigate the crimes committed by India during the attack.
The plaint has been submitted by Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), All Indian Sikh Students Federation, Simranjit Singh Mann-led SAD (Amritsar), Swiss-based Movement Against Atrocities And Repression, Supreme Sikh Council of Australia, UK-based Sewa 84 and two dozen other Sikh organizations have also endorsed it.
The Sikh bodies urged the UN to set up a probe team on the lines of international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to inquire into alleged crimes by the government.
