Bhai Gurmeet Singh (41) is facing imprisonment for life in Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s assassination (1995) case. He has already undergone 18 years in prison, where as the jail rules provide that a life term convict could be prematurely released after he/she has completed 14 years in prison.

According to certain media report the Chandigarh administration as well as the Government of India also failed to file their replies in the case in which the notices were issued to them on January 22.

The case came up for hearing before the division bench headed by justice Rajive Bhalla on Jan. 30. Next hearing in this matter is on February 18.

It may be recalled that Bhai Gurmeet Singh was released on parole on December 25, 2014 for the first time since his conviction in 2007 (he was in jail since 1995), after his case was highlighted by a Sikh activist Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa. Bhai Gurmeet SIngh had requested the Punjab and Haryana High Court to extend his parole, besides seeking permanent release, but the high court had on the last date of hearing refused to entertain this prayer for extention of parole, after which he had surrendered on January 23 in the Burail jail.
