Denying mortal remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt to their families is worst form of human rights violations

Amritsar: While paying their tributes to Mohammad Maqbool Bhatt on his 32nd death anniversary, the Dal Khalsa criticized the Indian state for its arrogant and indifferent attitude towards struggling peoples and nationalities.
Dal Khalsa leader Kanwarpal Singh and Human Rights activist Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema said the Indian state hanged Bhatt on this day in 1984 and buried him in Tihar jail. They said Bhatt sacrificed his life to ensure that his people get freedom from Indian yoke.
They said like in Afzal Guru case, the state has not returned the mortal remains of Maqbool Bhatt also, thus depriving both the families of their right to perform last rites of their kin’s as per their faith and beliefs. This is worst kind of human rights violations, they said.

Praising Bhatt’s mother Bibi Shahmala for sacrificing her four sons for Kashmir cause, they termed her ‘courageous lady’ to whom they met in Trehgam few years ago.
“I had an opportunity to visit Bhatt’s native village Trehgam along with Prof SAR Geelani from Delhi and Prof Jagmohan Singh from Ludhiana. We met Bhatt’s mother and sister and other relatives. To my surprise, I founded that his family members have preserved the house he lived in and also his other valuable belongings. For their own living, family had built a new house adjacent to the old one”, recollected Kanwar Pal Singh, We admire her dedication, spirit and affection towards the martyrs of faith, because it’s rare to see.
However, Dal Khalsa activist expressed regret that Sikhs as community failed to preserve the house and belongings of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale. I admit that the sense of preserving history and belongings of Sikh martyrs is missing in my community”, he said and added whether it was out of negligence or lack of understanding or both is yet to be gauged”.
