Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur case: No justice for Sikh youth killed in police firing even after 3 years

Gurdaspur, Punjab: “Three years have past … our son was shot dead by the police … but there is no justice. It seems as if they do not wan to impart justice in this case…”, said S. Gurcharanjit Singh, father of Shaheed Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur who was killed in police firing at Gurdaspur on 29 March, 2015.
The Sikh Sangat and the family of Bhai Jaspal Singh marked his third martyrdom anniversary yesterday (March 29). The Akhand Paath Sahib in the memory of Bhai Jaspal Singh was started on March 27. Akal Takhat Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh visited the family on March 28.
Bhog of Akhand Paath Sahib was held on March 29 and a Shaheedi Diwan was organized at Gurdwara Sahib build in the memory of Shaheed Jaspal Singh at village Chaur Sidhwan near Gurdaspur-Kalanaur road.

As per information Dal Khalsa leader Sarabjit Singh Ghuman, Sikh preacher Baba Baljeet Singh Daduwal, Sikh Youth of Punjab president Paramjeet Singh, local leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann) and AISSF president Karnail Singh Peermohammad also attended the Shaheedi Samagam besides representatives of various local Sikh bodies and youth organisations.
Talking to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone, S. Gurcharanjit Singh said that the police were biased in this case from the day first. “As the police personnel and officials were directly involved and responsible for firing and killing of Jaspal Singh, the police were trying to protect the culprits and trash the case”, he said.

Nothing yielded out from all our efforts for last three years and the police has filed a closure report in the court demanding closure of the case, he said adding that even High Court did not listen to their demand for CBI inquiry in this case.
Advocate Navkiran Singh who represented Shaheed Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur’s family before various police inquiries as well as in the Punjab and Harayan High Court, told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that the case was clear like a mirror, but the police did not want the case to go to trial.

The police weapon (AK-47) has been identified, the police personnel who had possession of the weapon is named in police’s own closure report filed in the court, there is forensic evidence to establish that the bullet recovered from the body of Jaspal Singh was fired from concerned police weapon … still the police says there is no need to start trial proceedings in this case, said Advocate Navkiran Singh.
Sikh author and former IAS officer S. Gurtej Singh (Chandigarh) says Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur’s murder was a clear indication that the state and the police machinery wanted to threaten the Sikh youth activists. Jaspal Singh was actively participating in peaceful protest movement against propose hanging of Sikh political prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana, S. Gurtej Singh says, and the movement was being led and organised by the Sikh youth. So in order to threaten the Sikh youth and appease Hindu extremist organisations like RSS, BJP and Shiv Sena (who were opposed to Sikh youth’s movement in favour of Rajoana) the police had opened fire on a peaceful Sikh protest at Gurdaspur on March 29, 2012.
The state do not want to punish the culprits as the firing incident and the killing of the Sikh youth were part of state’s wider- and undeclared policy framework adopted to snub any movement for Sikh political rights.
Case background:
It is notable that certain Shiv Sena activists had attacked and injured some Sikh youth in Gurdaspur during March 28, 2012 Punjab bandh called by the Sikh Panth to protest against hanging of Sikh political prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana. A case was also registered against Shiv Sena activists. Though no arrest was made by the police and the Shiv Sena activists were demanding quashing of FIR. They had called for Gurdaspur bandh on March 29 (2012).
On the other hand Sikhs were demanding arrest of Shiv sena activists who attacked few Sikh youth a day ago.
Less than hundred Sikhs, mostly youth, were staging a peaceful sit-in in front of a Gurdwara Sahib in Gurdaspur. The police brutally attacked the Sikhs and resorted to gun-firing on protester without any prior warning. Police personnel chased he Sikh youth who were fleeing from the spot of protest to save their life. The police firing left Jaspal Singh dead while another Sikh youth Ranjit Singh was seriously injured. Jaspal Singh was first year Engineering student of Beant College, Gurdaspur.
