JNU star Kanhaiya Kumar likely to visit Punjab to attend Hussainiwala event

March 8, 2016 | By

Chandigarh: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar is likely to visit Punjab on March 23 to attend an annual function to be held in the memory of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. A memorial at Hussainiwala marks the location where the three freedom fighters were cremated on March 23, 1931, on the banks of the Sutlej river, after being hanged by the British.

Kanhaiya Kumar, a left-wing activist, recently rose to popularity after he was charged with sedition for alleged anti-India slogans raised by some as-yet-unidentified people on the JNU campus on February 9.

Nearly irrelevant left-wing is hoping to use Kanhaiya Kumar’s popularity to seek revival in the state.

Soon after the release of Kanhaiya Kumar from jail the Punjab leadership Communist Party of India (CPI) and it’s student wing of his party, All India Students’ Federation (AISF) made a request to the central leadership to send Kanhaiya to Punjab.

“While Kanhaiya could not be contacted for direct confirmation, the national president of AISF, Syed Vali Ulla Khadri said, ‘I have talked to him on this and he has expressed his willingness to take part in the event to mark the martyrdom of the freedom fighters’, notes a report in Hindustan Times (HT).

As per HT report the organisation is concerned about the security of the firebrand student leader in view of recent threats to him.

The AISF is planning to request Punjab government to provide security for Kanhaiya Kumar for his visit to Hussainiwala. “If the state government agrees we will lay out the visit plan”, AISF president Syed Vali Ulla Khadri said.

Paramjit Singh Dhaban, state president, Sarb Bharat Naujawan Sabha, also said that Kanhaiya “desires to pay homage to martyrs at Hussainiwala so we have invited him. He will address a rally too.”
