Manhandling of a Sikh Couple Sparks Protest in Bharatpur

Bharatpur: To protest against the deplorable act in which a Sikh couple was assaulted scores of people from the Sikh community took to the streets in Bharatpur.

Demanding immediate arrest of the accused the protesters blocked the kotwali railway station road.

As per the report by Hindustan Times (HT) Satpal Singh, who works as a labourer at a furniture store, and his wife Asha were beaten up by a few men on Saturday when the couple raised objection against them for digging up a road for laying pipes. The accused allegedly also ripped off Singh’s turban and also torn his wife’s clothes. The couple suffered minor injuries in the attack. A complaint was lodged by the men by the police, but no arrests were made till Sunday sparking angry among the members of the community. Talking to (HT)  Balbir Singh Head granthi of Adarsh Nagar Gurudwara said removing turban from a Sikh’s head was an insult to the religion. The dastaar — as the Sikh turban is known — is an article of faith for the community and wearing it has been made mandatory by the founders of Sikhism.

He added to his statement “that forcible removal of man’s turban was an insult and will not be tolerated, he warned the authorities of impending agitation  if the accused are not arrested soon.”
